In the coal chemical industry, the low-temperature methanol washing process plays a pivotal role. Whether it's direct liquefaction of coal, indirect liquefaction, or gasification of coal to produce chemical products, most processes require gas purification, and low-temperature methanol washing is undoubtedly the most competitive and mature gas purification technology currently available. It has been widely used in domestic and international ammonia synthesis, methanol synthesis, other carbonyl synthesis, city gas, industrial hydrogen production, and natural gas desulfurization gas purification units. Especially for the purification of syngas produced from coal (coal-water slurry) or slag (heavy) oil, this method is even more effective. In China, most large-scale ammonia synthesis and methanol synthesis plants using coal and slag oil as raw materials also adopt this technology. Low-temperature methanol washing has a higher investment cost, but compared to other desulfurization and decarbonization processes, it has advantages such as low power consumption, low steam consumption, low solvent cost, and low operating costs. In particular, the high purification degree of desulfurization is very beneficial to methanol and ammonia production.
In the low-temperature methanol washing process, hydrogen sulfide does not undergo chemical conversion but is enriched in the acid gas, which is then treated using the Claus process. However, the Claus desulfurization process is a catalytic oxidation process for acid gases with high sulfur content. It requires high investment, a long process, and a sulfur content of over 10%, making it unsuitable for acid gas desulfurization with low inlet sulfur content and high purification requirements. For acid gas desulfurization with high purification requirements, multiple Claus stages are needed, resulting in a long process and high investment. When the H2S content is >12%, the gas becomes more corrosive and toxic, and is flammable and explosive. In NHD or low-temperature methanol washing units, H2S needs repeated absorption, desorption, and concentration to barely reach over 12%, barely suitable for Claus sulfur recovery technology. Moreover, the Claus sulfur recovery desulfurization tail gas H2S or SO2 is difficult to meet national emission standards, with typical contents of 300-3000 ppm, often requiring further treatment. The Claus sulfur recovery technology is clearly not an ideal acid gas desulfurization technology.

This unit is suitable for H2S content from 0% to 100%, and H2S conversion can be completed in one step. It has low energy consumption and produces no three wastes. Compared with traditional Claus desulfurization, investment can be saved by 50%, and operating costs can be saved by 50%. Our developed chelating iron wet method for removing hydrogen sulfide from coal gas has advanced technology and high hydrogen sulfide removal efficiency. The H2S content in the purified coal gas is below 5 ppm.
